Car Stalling in mid drive!

Ok guys, I'm having this small problem.. Actually it's fairly large.
I was drving the other day (this has happened 3 times now) doing 70 on a highway when my rpm's just drop.
When the RPM drops if I mash the gas I can gt them to bounce up just a little and then they fall again (almost as if I ran out of gas it seems)
I know it's not low gas because it'll happen at many various times, and it did it 3 gallons into a tank of gas most recently.
IF I put the car in neutral it starts right back up again.

I've had a couple things that might be problematic...

1) I've had this wierd vibration at certain rpm's. It's near my feet and I'm lead to believe that it's the exhaust rattling. So I don't think this is the issue.

2) I've had ticking noise as I accel.. I thought this was an exhaust leak from bolts loosining on my headers, but maybe this noise is my injectors?

I'm not sure what's wrong, but I'm lead to believe that somewhere in the fuel system I'm having some problem.. Either pump filter or injectors... What do you guys think it is?
Perhaps it's time to invest in that new TBI and all the rest of the fuel system to go with it..

Injector tick is usually extremely hard to hear inside the car. I'd say you're pinging, caused by either excessive timing or running lean. Back the timing off to factory if it's advanced at all just to be safe. Definitely sounds like you're having fuel delivery issues. Maybe your pump's going. Checked fuel pressure yet?

I will check the fuel pressure ASAP.. I think I can do that tonight.. but if the car doesn't stall all that often won't it register as if it's normal?
I should only see a dip in the fuel pressure as it's set to stall right?

Or will it dip and such but won't dip low enough until it stalls?
lemme know..
Thanks
Justin

No way to know for sure but it might start doing funny things if the pump is dying. Also, yank the throttle lever back a few times and watch the gauge. It should go up, since the fuel pressure regulator is vacuum controlled. More throttle = less vacuum = more fuel pressure.

Check the catalytiuc converter while your at it. It may flow fine for a fresh start, or idle, but continued higher rpm may build up back pressure causing your car to die...

Man I wish they mad no-cloggable cats

So far I have had 5 cars that either I or my family owned with clogged cats as the overheat/no power/no start culprit. Easy to check

I don't think this is the problem though.. I just replaced the cat a few months ago with a new highflow cat. should I still check it?

im havin just about the same problem.....i have a 305 auto, but my car doesnt stall out or act like its going to inless i go 45 mph or higher.........if im gettin on the freeway and i punch it to merge, as soon as i get off and i start to slow down the car stalls. i replaced the fuel pump in july so i dont think thats it, this problem didnt really bother me that much at first cuz it wasnt as bad as it is now, so if someone could help me i'd really like it! thankkkkkkk u!

check your coil and your egnition system. or could be something simple >the fuel in the fuel line is vaporizing in the fuel line from excess heat.

I'm wondering how old your fuel filter is. Maybe it's clogging up. Why didn't I think of this earlier.

lol I don't know how old it is either, but since it's only 6 bucks I might as well change it on friday..
I've come up with a list of options..

1) change fuel filter

2) Reinstall 305 injectors for now just to see if the are defective

3) check fuel pump

4) Keep a can of gas in the back of the car for when it stalls on the highway and it won't start so I can douse the car in gas and claim it caught fire on it's own.

Just kidding about #4, I'm sure I'll find the problem. BTW what's the best way to check the fuel pressure?

Buy a fuel pressure gauge. Hook it up to the Schrader valve with the engine cold (to avoid fuel spraying out the valve). If the engine is still a little warm or has been run at all that day, keep a rag around the fitting as you hook it up cause it will shoot fuel of course. Start the car and let it run til it gets warm, and make sure the idle speed is normal. Check fuel pressure at idle. Then remove the vacuum line from your fuel pressure regulator and see what it reads. Should be higher. Put the vacuum back on and rev the motor a little and see what happens. Just look for anything odd. When you're done, just have a gas can handy to use the drainback valve to relieve the pressure behind the gauge and disconnect it.

Easy stuff.

This is WAAAYYYY down on the list of possibilities
BUT...

I just went through this exercise - car would stall under all driving conditions - acceleration, deceleration, cruise. Just would stop running, like it stopped getting spark. No buck, no hesitation, no nothing.

Changed the fuel pump, distributor, ignition module, magnetic pick-up coil, checked plug wires and plugs, cleaned rotor and cap - finally ended up being a bad computer - but the only clue was that I was also getting a code 53 - MemCal error.

By ALL means - check your codes - they may direct you in the right direction. But if all else fails, CONSIDER the computer.

no codes, and the ECU is only a year old since I had an ecu failure last fall I believe it was
