Piston Return Springs
Piston Return Springs
I've heard of these wonderous devices being good to replace in an old engine, or in a rebuild. I'm not quite certain what they are.
My understanding: They help the piston pull back faster from a stroke, thus lightening the load somewhat in the rotational motion, and helping you spin a bit more efficiently through your compression cycles.
What I don't know, is where are these beasts? I'm assuming, that they're under the piston, perhaps somewhere on the connecting rods? Please give me a bit of an education here, I don't know much about the intricacies of the lower half of the engine. Thanks!

I know exactly what you're talking about. I just helped a friend rebuild a 350, and we installed them. I'm not sure how much credit to give to the springs, since we did a lot of work on that engine, but he just ran an 11.35 after the rebuild. The best he had done before that rebuild was 11.68.
I'll see if I can dig up the installation instructions for them and scan them in. I also have a spare set, for 3.48" stroke engines, if you are interested. I'll sell the set of 8 for $50.00 + shipping. Takes about 2 or 3 minutes per piston to install.

I have never heard of any such thing, not that my not hearing of it would keep it from existing, but...
There are springs to make lifters follow the cam better; those are commonly referred to as a "Hydra-Rev" kit. That is a set of springs that go under the head and press down on the top of the lifters, around the push rods, to help take some of the inertial load (moving the mass of the lifters) off of the valve springs.
I'd like to know what the other post was talking about, perhaps he could give us some details.

hrm... looks kinda bogus(webpage), i understand tbe concept.. but how much do they actually help.. since they have to be compressed before they help the engine.. does it really help that much? i never dismiss an idea before i know stuff about it... what did you guys think(who installed them)

I never would've thought about the "swirl" added to the fuel/air mixture, either! Great job!!------------------
