Building motor with block still attached??
I was thinking about building my motor with the block still attached to the motor mounts. Has anyone ever done it before?
I wanna pretty much replace everything crank rods pistons cam heads but i would problay have to take out radiator and other misc front end parts to get the cam in. Anybody know where i can get some high compression 305 pistons?

Not a good idea but an over haul could be done in the car just not the type your considering. Pull te engine tear it down let a machine shop clean, hone and order the correct parts. This way its done correct and if something does go wrong you have someone else to blame.
i'm sure lot of people have. why would you want to? it's more time and effort involved leaving it in than pulling it, plus you can't clean or machine it, plus there's just about no way to do cam bearings

yea i forgot about the cam bearings. It really seemed like a quicker way to get it done because i dont really have the resources to be able to pull the motor and i wasnt gunna get it machined i was gunna do all the cleaning myself but cleaning the block when its stil in the car might be messy.

Not to mention impossible...
Go rent a cherry-picker at your local rental yard. It'll be alot cheaper than a leaking, smoking, blowing-up half-a'ed Krylon rebuild, which you'll just have to pull out and do right anyway.... the second time, after wasting a whole bunch of time and money, and putting out twice as much effort trying to get out of doing work as the work itself.

The Oil pan can be removed with the engine in, but it is a PITA. As for rebuilding the motor, if you really want to overhaul it in the engine bay, you can, but IMO that's more like a "I'm doing this so I can sell it" type of deal. If you want a really good rebuild, remove that motor, and save yourself the extra headaches. For all the work involved, I agree with the other guys, it's just easier to pull out. You can get high compression 305 pistons from summit racing if you are interested. Hope that helps.

Think about it ...in order to pull the crank you have to pull the trans out to take off the flex plate. You're also gonna need to pull the heads off and everything else so the only thing holding you back from pulling the shortblock out would be 2 bolts so pulling the motor would be much easier and cleaner.

To do the motor in the car is spending an hour to save 10 minutes. Your neighbors will have a greater chance of "catching you", because the tedious project will take longer.
Single bay garage? Back your car in to the garage and close the garage door. Pull the hood, drive shaft, trans, rad, harness, motor mount bolts, AC comp, PS pump, fuel lines, and exhaust manifolds, etc, etc...get it ready.
Bolt on a chain proper, so the engine will be balanced. Do all this w/the garage door closed.
Open the garage door, use the rented picker and yank the engine. You should be able to do it in about 10 minutes.
Put the engine to one side cover it, and close the garage door. put the hood back on the park the car out side, and bring the engine into the garage. Close the door. Now all that your neighbors know is that your car is parked in the driveway, and your garage door is closed. They should have no idea you're creating a MONSTER in there! lol

That sucks. There should be no rules keeping your from working on your car in your own garage. Now outside maybe. Its probably a nice community and they don't want car parts everywhere. I live in a small town that is real nice. I did a engine swap in my driveway. *** it was hideous. I will never do that again. I felt bad for my mom and dad because the whole yard and everything looked terrible. LOL.
Next time im gonna bum my grandpas garage off him. It will be much easier that way. Huge 3 car garage...should be plenty of room

My reaction to those people would be something like, "hey, blow me."
That is your own turf- if they've got a problem with that, break 'em off some.
