How to tell a 350

Hello

How do I tell if a engine is a 350? when out of the car(so no vin to go by). Where on the block are the numbers and what will the 350 numbers be?

Top of the bell housing flange, behind the driver's side head; get the casting # and look it up at
http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm

Also, 350s often have a big "5.7" cast into teh block there, while 305s have a "5.0".

At the back of the block (trans flange, driver's side) is the block part number. On the front passenger side (infront of cylinder head) there is a pad that has the block code (three letters), build date, and corresponding partial VIN of the vehicle (if not a crate) it was originally installed in. See sig link for details.

If it still has a manifold on it, the 305 manifold has a grid on the front left side.

Actually, that is just a manifold design (asthetic) change. The manifolds for all SBC are the same regardless of CID, so that is not an accurrate way of decifering from a 305 and a 350.
