Valves Tapping, need help

Can you adjust valve lash without the engine running? I tried to do it with the engine running but the socket will not stay on the adjusting nut. I just installed a new camshaft.

Joe,

Yes, you can adjust valve lash on a cold engine. I always like to do final adjustment on a hot, running engine just to make sure.

With an aftermarket cam with decent lift, you might have to run the adjustment a little on the loose side. The stock specification is to adjust 1/2-1 full turn after the zero lash point. With a cam of over 0.500" lifts, you might want to limit that to 1/2-3/4 turs after zero lash. This will prevent inadvertent lifter pump-up and the deadly piston kissing. But then, I'm just a chicken.

You might have a little trouble keeping anything other than a thin-walled socket on the adjusting nuts when the engine is running, but it can be done. A higher lift cam only makes it worse, since the rockers are pivoting in a longer arc.

Oh. One more thing. Let's try to keep the insults to a minimum. We don't need to have any more members banned...

Just a reminder.

I sent you a file showing the step by step on makig the adjustments.

If I remember correctly, you went to a ZZ9, which is the same cam I'm running. I just hope that your engine was a roller cam engine because the pushrod lengths are difference between a flat tappet cam and a hydraulic roller by a LOT. You'd also need a thrust bumper and Torrington bearing set to control cam movement if you are using a non factory roller cam engine.

Let me know how you make out.

Jake
