Help fuel pump/other problem??????
Help fuel pump/other problem??????
I have a 92 Camaro with 305 TBI. The car was running fine then a couple weeks ago while driving it abruptly acted as if it was not getting enough fuel or a bad mix. If you tried to give it gas it sputtered like the choke was on but in idle ran fine with only minor hickups. Was able to get it home by barely giving it gas but if tried to give it more than just a little gas it acted like it would die although it never did. Took the fuel line off to check to see if the fuel pump was working etc.. and plenty of flow. Put it back togehter and it ran like a champ for a week (I did nothing just started running normal again) then today did the same thing, so it is off again off again (weird). I did replace the fuel filter couple weeks ago after the first problem. Any idea what this may be???????????
id say fuel filter aswel. might even get a new fuel pump relay (like 10 bucks)

Since you're so good at changing the filter, I'd try another new AC filter first. If that doesn't fly, perform a flow test. The pump should be able to move at least 1 pint in 15 seconds into an open container. If it doesn't do at least that, check for obstructed lines, or plan on a new pump.

Would the relay or fuel pump account for it acting up and then suddenly running great for a week or how about the relay? Ill try the flow test again and see if it does flow or not. Worse case Ill throw another fuel pump on I just hope it is the fuel pump and not some weird injection problem past the fuel filter point.
Thanks for suggestions

Ok im not an auto wiz but today someone asked me " hey when you turn your key on and let it sit does your fuel filter kick on (that little buzzing noise)". I tried it and no, there was no such noise, so based on that im going to put it on ramps tomorrow and check the fuel pump connections etc.. and then the relay if I can figure out where that is, then if all else fails Ill stick a new fule pump on although I hate to spend the money.

I have to add this, as remote a possibility as it may be. My 4.3 S10 did the same thing a year ago. It was not the fuel pump or filter. One of my vacuum lines was touching the distributor cap, and it melted a hole in it. When the hose was tight against the cap, it was fine, but it sucked air if it moved just a little bit. Sometimes it would run fine, other times it would idle like **** and going down the road if you touched the gas it would start to choke and would only stay running if you floored it so it would downshift. This one haunted me for a couple weeks. So check your vacuum lines too. They're getting about that age anyway when you might have to start replacing them here and there.

Palz,
The fuel pump relay on my 1991 RS VIN "E" is located on the firewall (drivers side). There are two relays there, the other one being the fan relay. If I recall correctly, the fuel pump relay is the one closest to the passenger side w/ grn/white (relay cntrl ECM), grey (fuel pump), blk/white (ground), orange (battery), red (fuel pump prime) wires.
Let us know what you find out.

Ok I have several good suggestions to check now. I'm about to go run it up on ramps and start checking some of these possibilities to include the vacume hoses as that is exactly what my ride is doing. I'm leaning towards the fuel pump relay or fuel pump itself. Ill let you know how it turns out.
Thanks again
Thanks again
Well before putting on the new fuel pump relay I checked the fuel pump and it is now working and the car still ran bad. Put on the new relay (which fit like crap even though they say it is deffenitaley the correct one) and no luck there. Ill try the flow test again tomorrow. If it turns out to be the fuel pump how much of a pain is that to do? Do you have to pop the tank off or what to get to the internal pump?
