Vortec heads, valve guides...

Hey guys, I have been looking into buying a set of vortec heads and the performer RPM intake to go with it. Now I figured I'd have the buy the ones in summit for $740 bucks so they could handle my cam. So with that i added it to a 170 for and intake and what not and realized why don't I just spend a few more bucks and get some better heads. But me and my buddy went to this speedshop the other day, This guy and his wife have been aroudn for 35 years buildin race motors and they do all machine work and sell all there parts for the same price as jegs so its great. Well I got talkin and I said to him " How much would you want to machine the guides down on some vortecs to take a higher lift cam?" He said 35 bucks. Now he did say I have to bring him the bare head but I mean thats no big deal at all. So is that about the normal price to do this? cause now I can get into some vortecs for aroudn $650 bucks. *** I can't wait lol.

I was seriously thinking of those heads too, because you CAN get alot of power from them...then I read this:

I dunno where this guy found TrickFlow heads for 850 bucks but i'd like to know. Ok letts look at it from my point though, Vortec heads = $500, Performer RPM intake = 170, Machined valve guides = $35, valve covers = free, Intake gaskets = $22??? I get 20% off i work at pepboys, and I think head gaskets are liek 25 or sumtin. I have good springs rigth now so no big deal there. So i'm looking at like $750 bucks on my car. Thats not that bad considering you can;t buy any decent heads for less then $950 unless you go with worlds but you mine as well not do anyting if you do that lol. Maybe its cheaper for some people then others but all in all its not a bad deal
