anyone know anyting about 882 heads?
Any of you guys know about chevy 882 heads? I know they're a '74-'80 350/400 76cc head, but nothing more. I've gotten a 4bolt main block for my '79 t/a and it's got these heads on it. Just wondering if they'll be ok with a decent cam, holley 600 and a decent intake. Thanx.

figured they were low compression smog junk. Just didn't know how bad. Hey, free car, free motor. Can't go wrong!

Expect low 14's with these heads and a mild cam in a 3rd gen.
In a 2nd gen, which is a heavy car, expect mid 14's. Some of the guys over on nastyz28.com have 'em on their 2nd gen camaros, most of the time their et's are a bit... well, disappointing, primarily because they're on my car. =(
My car is definitely quick, but I wouldn't call it fast compared to some of the things out there.

they're crap... atleast compared to any good heads..
i had a pair of them on my 400 at first... because well, i had them and no other heads and i was running out of money.
882s with 3 angle valve job........ choked the heck out of my 400.
882s ported with biggest valves that could fit.... better, but still not good.
i junked them, barrowed a set of AFRs.... man, WORLD of diff......
i wouldnt spend the time to even bolt them on..... kind of a sucky thing to say to someone when thats the only head they have, but you're better off either looking for a diff stock casting, or saving up a lil longer for some better heads.

If you're looking for performance your first best move would be to replace those heads with ........just about anything else.
Swapping to a set of vortecs will chop a full second off the quarter mile performance from 882's.

They are about the best smog-era head you can get. That of course, isn't saying much. I've got a pair out behind the house rotting under a tarp. They're pretty much worthless.

The better ones are the 441's 487X 336 and 920 castings. Some of these were Hi perf heads on 71-73 low compression ratio Z28 motors and have factory 2.02's and screwin rockers and guideplates. Not to bad when ported with larger valves.
All are 76 to 80cc's low compression heads.
the worst are the light weight 882's 624's etc.
really bad exhaust port.
The 305HO heads have as much or more potential (then the better smog heads) with porting and larger valves and the small combustion chamber makes for easy high compression ratios.

Just thought I'd ask about them since that's what I've got. They're on a free 4-bolt 5.7 block so I cant complain. Got an intake and Holley 650 with it too. I can't complain. I could always put a set of Vortec's on it down the road.
BTW, what are the good vortec casting #'s? I see quite a few on ebay. Also a lot of 991 heads......????

The vortec to look for are 062 and 906 castings
don't know what a 991 is. A 191 is a low perf swirl port head... Don't bother.
