1991 1LE cooling question

Just bought a 1991 1LE Z28 and I was wondering if anyone would know how to get the cooling fan to come on at a cooler temperature. It is a single electric fan set up so it does not utilize the temp. switch in the head. Any help would be appreciated.

Replace the temp switch in the head (yes, it has one) with a cooler one or an adjustable one. It will be in the pass side head between the #6 and #8 plugs.

The coolent sensor in the head is not used on the 1LE. There is no harness that connects to the switch in the head.

Ummmmm, I highly doubt that there's not a temp sensor there. It's kinda hard to find it unless you jack up the car and crawl under the passenger side. Don't mistake the knock sensor for it either. The knock sensor screws into the bottom side of the engine block right in front of the starter. If for some really strange reason, you really don't have a sensor there, it's got to have one somewhere. Otherwise your fan would run all the time, or never come on at all. The only other way I could think of to get a temp. reading would be if the ecm controlled your fan using input from the sensor in the front of your intake manifold, but I've never heard of one using that.

It has a coolent sensor in the head but there is no harness connecting to it. Since this is a 1LE and has no A/C it is easy to get to that sensor. I was hoping it would be as simple as changing that sensor like I have on my other Z28's and B4C's. Like I say, this 1LE uses a little different setup than a standard Z28. The 1LE has only one large electric fan. I would like to get it to kick on at an earlier temperature. I think you might be right about the ecm controlling the fan. But would that mean I would need to get a chip for it? Thanks for the help guys.

One big fan? My 91 1le has 2 fans. My fan switch is visible (underneath the car) between 6 and 8 cylinder like stated.

To get your fans to come on sooner go buy a JET fan switch. Comes on at 195*s, goes off at 185*s.

Hypertech makes ones that come on sooner, but you won't need that if you're running the stock 195* thermostat.

And yes the other option would be to have it programmed in your ecu. But I have a stock prom with a Jet fan switch and it works out great.

O.K. guys help me here. My 1LE has one big electric fan from the factory. I know normally to get the dual fan setup to come early you get the switch. On my other cars that is what I have done(Jet). I will be changing the t-stat in the 1LE to a 180* so I would like to get the fan to kick on earlier. It doesn't kick on till the last yellow line(225-235* I'm guessing). This is my first true 1LE so I don't know if they all came single fans or it was a mixture of both.

I personally have not heard of anything like that before ..ever.

If what you're saying is true, then contact www.fastchips.com and get a custom chip burnt. That will kick your fans on at either 160* or 180*. I recommend choosing the 180* though.
Just my $.02

p.haze92 does have the fan switch in between cylinder's 6 and 8, there is nothing connected to it though. I looked at his car the other day, it is not like a Z28 with A/C and the dual fan setup, it has one big electric fan that must be controlled by the PCM. Does anybody know for "sure" if there is a chip whether it be Ed Wright, Hypertech, or JET that brings the fan on earlier?
