Sadly the '86 TPI was hobbled with a poor camshaft. So, you may not like to hear about how the car was originally a 16.1 second, 86 MPH performer.

figures. my two friends own these two cars:

1999 Volkswagen Golf GTI GLX 2.8 L SOHC V-6 2880 lbs 174 bhp @ 5800 rpm 181 lb/ft @ 3200 rpm 6.8 sec. 15.3 sec. @ 92.7

1999 Acura Integra GS-R 1.8 L DOHC VTEC In-line 4 2620 lbs 170 bhp @ 7600 rpm 128 lb/ft @ 6200 rpm 7.2 sec. 15.6 sec. @ 91.1

All of a sudden, V8's look like really stupid engines to own. granted, we have come a long way in 14 years. but still...

I can see why muscle cars arn't as vogue as they used to be. with a new civic able to hold almost as good, and a new integra being able to beat a older camaro stock...

no replacement for displacement my *** . true, if i took my 2,700 dollar car, and had a budget of a new car (18-22 grand) i could really make it fast, but uh, you can't quite take out a new-car loan for that much, and drop it in a older car. no bank would allow that.

Sad thing is, the integra owner used to own a 1988 z/28.

Hmm. there needs to be a bank that will loan out more money for a personal loan. (granted, how much you make, and credit history count for some, but even then, a personal loan isn't going to be much. certainly not enough for a crate zz4, and all of the installation goodies)

thanks for the specs! i figured it was around there myself. couldnt seem to find them anywhere!

Look at my SIG.

Does my little 305 look slow?

Did you know I spent only $850 on the engine, and $650 on the exhaust? I also spent $22 on my induction system.

I have a lot of extra speed parts on the car, but they are there because of my intent to step up to a 450 HP engine.

So, if you want to go fast, do this:

take your Z28, and let me port the plenum & intake. Add a cam. Add a real exhaust system. Tune up the ignition system.

You'll now be in the 14's and mid-90's at the track. Your total investment will be the cost of your car plus about $1000 to $1500.

The simple physics of rear wheel drive are in YOUR favor! You are simply the victim of mid-eighties emissions rules. In the year 2000 there are many, many new tools at your disposal that are both effective, inexpensive, and relatively clean with regards to emissions.

I don't think it's fair to compare a new $18000 car to your Camaro as far as performance. How about comparing a new $18000 V6 Camaro to your friends car? The V6 puts out more power than your present V8 due to technology advancements. The 3800 V6 is a true 210 HP engine that turns low 15's in the quarter mile. Now, compare your V8 to a 1965 283. That little '65 283 was a 17 second engine. Even the '57 Corvette with dual quads was only a 15 second car, IIRC. Perspective.

Good luck.
