car wont start--no power

hey guys ive got a friend and his solenoid went bad so he put a new one on and such and it wasnt workin still unless you arched it...well turns out there is SOMETIMES no power to the solenoid...okay heres the crazy part....when you turn the key back to the accessory then start the car everything is fine and there is power there but if you just start it regularly without tryin that it doesnt work. hes had a new steering column recently installed and it is our guess that there is a problem within it. on our cars is there a rod that that moves back and forth when the key is turned that may need adjustment from the recent install of the column..or do we have a completely different problem???
sorry about the length fellas and any help would be cool thanks.

The ignition switch is on top of the column, under the dash, just look for the switch that is the hardest to get to without your third elbow. Prolly just needs a little adjusting, it is held down by two, possibly three, screws, just loosen them up a little, move the switch in the desired direction, tighten them down, and try again. Not real hard, once you figure out how to get your hand in there..... You can usually feel the operating rod, it goes down the left side of the column, and then bends around to the top to hit the switch. Have fun now.

hey everyone, this is my car that stroked has been talking about, thx stroke for posting for me!
Little update for you all now it just doesn't work at all like how he said if you turn it to ACC then to START and it starts, well now it won't do that either, so I'm assuming that rod is just completely loose now or whatever, im not totally sure if i understand how the rod works
SO Today I just arched the starter to get the car started and I drove it down to the SHOP that put in the steering column and there going to check it out and let me know if thats the problem.... I'll know more tomorrow
