To buy new or re-use (Oil pump)

Building up a 383 and deciding whether or not to reuse or get a new oil pump. Heres whats going on. Nothing was wrong with my 350, just wanted to stroke it and at 81K the oil pressure was perfect 40 at idle and 60 on the highway. I took apart the pump and checked everything and it all spec out to what the chevy book said it should be. But anyways I picked up a melling just for the hell of it and it seems that when I turn it by hand its noisy and seems too loose. Is it worth buying the new pump? or just adding a steel collarshaft to the old one and reusing it. I have heard that these pumps are made well and rarely go. I'm just afraid of putting the new pump on and finding my PSI to be lower then with the old pump. What are your thoughts?

Its always a good idea to replace the pump and pickup tube. The old oil pump is probably good but it isnt somthing I would re-use in a freshly rebuild engine.

for less than 30 dollars you can have a new pump, i tihnk it'd be a dumb move to reuse the old one, i never reuse oil pumps or timing gear/chain sets. buy a m55 pump and a mr gasket #26 spring weld a brace from the pick up and bolt it to the pump

even on a dirt cheap junkyard motor, about the only thing you def do, is replace the pump.

Yep, last thing you want is the motor to blow cause you didn't buy a $30 part. Later man
