My speedo needle bounces and I would like to lubricate it to see if this will fix it. I took a quick look in the engine bay and could not identify the cruise control unit. Is this unit in the engine bay or under the dash?

BTW - It's an 88 IROC with the 700R4.

 

Not sure what it looks like on an IROC. There should be a "plunger-type-thingy" located in the front driver's side of the engine bay. It connects to a cable that is tied into the throttle assembly. The setup actually works on vacuum pressure to set the cruise control. Thats all I know since I never read deep into the manual (which is probably the best source for your answer)

That plunger is the cc servo assembly. There's also the cruise control cable that connects to your throttle - it's the one with the long slot. There's also vacuum lines that circle around to the servo from the rear of the plenum I believe. Does the needle bounce only when cruise is on? If not, unless the cruise control cable itself is restricting throttle movement (doubtful) then the cc is not at fault.

If I am not mistaken the speedo cable does not act as an input device for thirdgen cruise control systems. Sorry if I am incorrect.

It could very well be true that the speedo cable is not an input to the cruise, but I don't understand ow it would work without it.

I was simply applying my knowledge when I had the same problem on my '83 M/C SS last year. There were 2 speedo cables on the SS. One ran from the transmission to the cruise unit, and the other ran from the cruise unit to the speedo head. I disconnected both cables at the cruise unit and used cable lub to free up the cable. The bouncing stopped on my SS.

It does bounce all of the time...

 

On my 83 Z28 there is the exact same style of unit that you describe on your MC. I'm not sure if they kept using that system as late as 88. If they did, the servo is on the left fender well, much like the MC. If not, you probably have a defective VSS.

The Firebirds in those years use an electronic speedo and cruise. What applies to them does not apply to the Camaro.

The cruise control unit is located behind the dash on the passenger side. It is a small black box with the label "AC" on it.

It appears that the early 80's configuration is not the same as the configuration in my 88. I'll look around a little more seriously this weekend and get back to you all. Thanks.
