If its a stock replacement dished piston it will be probabily 11 or 13cc's.

You'll need to know the "compression height" to guestimate how
much piston to deck clearance there will be.

Compression height is the distance from the piston pin bore centerline to the top of the flat part of a piston.

A typical common compression height spec for a 350 piston is
1.54" (.045" down the bore) or 1.56" (.025" down the bore.)
This is typical for a stock block that has not been decked.

Go here and plug in your #'s into the Compression page

before i took the short block appart it looked like it had the 1.54" height because it looked like it was pretty deep just looking at it. do you think that would be what was stock? it's an 87 truck block.

Probabily either or..... Do you still have an old piston from that motor?

You won't know your exact piston to deck clearance till you
assemble the short block.

according to that calculator if i have 58cc heads(thats about what 64cc heads milled .035 would be right?), .045 down bore, .042" thick gaskets and 12cc piston dish, my compression would be about 9.11, at .025 down it would be 9.5. does that sound right?

if the pistons are the ones that give me 9.1 i'd probably have the block milled to .020.

You could get 9.8:1 with a .015" shim headgasket and no block machining in the same motor. Just right.

This is all you need to buy to cc your heads, and piston dishes etc.

i would do that, but the car is my daily driver and i need to get the engine out, swap the heads and all and get it in and running in about a weekend. i guess i could get my 80 TA on the road and drive that for a few days.
