sporatic timing jump
sporatic timing jump
The car in my sig 305 with the hei ignition system no computer controls and a Holley 600cfm vac sec carb. I was setting the timing on my car with the vacuum advance disconnected of course and plugged at the carb. I noticed occasionally my timing would jump to advance without any blipping of the throttle. I am not sure what to think here. I replaced the reluctor the module tested good the cap rotor and coil are new. The wires are Accel superstock and where bout recently too. I ran the car tonight in the dark and I didnt see a single arc......can you guys help here. Oh and I doubt it is the timing chain too.....It was just replaced.
Distributor worn?
Distributor fully seated against the intake?
RPM a little high? (Advance weights on the edge of taking effect.)
Wiring intact?
Since you had the distributor out to replace the reluctor, you probably would have noticed worn bushings. Make sure it's clamped down fairly snugly and the gasket is seated.
I doubt it would be a TC either, since they usually just get the slack taken up by the oil pump.
You might want to try to lower the curb idle to about 550 RPM to set the timing, then readjust it to whatever you like.
Just guessin' here...

Hello Vader,
I am leaning on the side of wires arcing together. Tomorrow I am gonna try to re route the wires and minimize contact between them. The other thing I need to look at that I noticed, is that I think my pcv valve way not be working right. It has strong vacuum but I think I have a leak there. The bushings in the distributor were fine as you mentioned. I did observe the jumping with the car in gear at an idle of 600. It jumped around occasionaly but never consistant. When I would blip the throttle i would watch the timing advance and then would retard before steadying.
