l98 idle problems...
buddy just got a 89 l98 iroc.. havnt gotten to check it over yet cos of the weather so i wanna check your opinions first.. i noticed from day one it had a fairly lopey idle (sounded as if it had a crazy cam), well the other nite were sitting at a idle, idling around 800rpm in park when suddenly she started backfiring and popping and stalling.. after starting back up a few times she died, and poped the hood.. as i suspected, no spark.. replaced the coil, problem fixed, yet now she still has a rough time idling and will stall if given the chance.. also shes running very rich (can smell fuel) so im suspecting some plugs may be fouled, but at the same time im suspecting a electrical problem.. as i was under the hood, the dome light was on, in the dark i was able to see it flicker a bit on its own.. checked for a loose battery wire with no avail.. first thing soon as we find a garage im pulling plugs.. any other ideas?
Scoob,
Given that he just got the vehicle, treat it as if it were a POS. Unless you know the person from whom the car was purchased, and can trust that person implicitly (like to the point of NOT sleeping with your girlfriend even if she asks) don't assume that any maintenance has been done. It's far too easy to falsify receipts and service records, or to forget when service was done and recall incorrect dates/mileages.
Start from the top. All fluids, filters, routine service, ignition components, adjustments, etc. Everything from the differential oil to the front wheel bearing repack should be done. Once the car has been returned to a "normal" serviceable condition, any remaining problems are a lot easier to solve.
As a general hint, most idle problems on TPIs are due to IAC problems. While you're there doing all the adjustments and service, clean teh IAC and air passages in the TB. Set the minimum air position and TPS voltage, and the problem should at least be better.
There are instructions in the Tech Articles, or I have some I can email.
