starter wont shut off (new starter)

Doesn't seem like im going get a break this month with this car. I just had few problems fixed. I just replaced starter and I did search on here someone else had same problem and everyone suggested was bad starter soledoid however this is brand new starter really dont want take it back off get new 1 if its something else besides starter was a pain to get in. I started car and running and starter seems like it still trying crank sounds like is running an d i let go of teh key ran unhook the battery scared another fire might happen i replaced the wire from the batter to starter this is brand new also and i made sure it was tight i looke din book no help as the orginal starter had one small screw for the wire on the solenoid however this starer has two small ones on solenoid and then battery connection in middle the one to the right of batter connection is where i hooked up the other small wire should i change it to the left side?? btw its an 1985 camaro berlinetta 305 if that helps

That's why I bench test them before I put them in, regardless if they are brand new or rebuilt (have gotten a few junk starters over the years). The terminal towards the block is the right one for the ignition wire. If you are looking at the rear of the solenoid, it's on the right side. Was the old starter shimmed? Look for any frayed wires. It could be your ignition switch but I doubt it. Probably another bad starter/solenoid. Don't keep trying it. You can snap the nose off the starter or worse... damage your flywheel/flexplate. If the wires check out, I would take down the starter and bench test it.

i'll bet it's not a brand new starter at all but a rebuilt one from the cheapest place in town. a new starter would fix it, a real new starter. another rebuilt one might or would fix it too.

yep sounds like a crappy rebuild... i got one from the local advance auto parts.. brought it home.. same problem.. took it back... got another 1... most stores have testers.. have em hook the new one up before you leave the store to make sure it works.. nothing sucks more then fixing the same thing over and over..

did you put the small wire on the post next to the block or away from the block. It goes on the one next to the block, you know the one that is hard to get to. If you put it on the one away from the block the starter gets a back feed from the ignition and keeps running once its engaged
