How far on does the crank gear go?

I am installing a timing chain set on my 88 TPI.

do I push the timing gear on all the way to the crankshaft stop or is there a distance I should install it to?

It should seat against the shoulder behind it on the crank.

Heat it up in boiling water or a 300 degree oven before you put it on, it will go on much easier.
