Hello,

A friend of mine recently told me about a car for sale in his neighborhood for cheap-an '88 Camaro RS with a 5.0L V8. Was TPI an option for the car or can it only have TBI since it's an RS? Also, I know the car has an auto trans so would it be safe to say it's a TH700R4?

hello matthew... welcome to thirdgen.org if it's an '88 it would be a Sport Coupe not an RS. (only year of sport coupe w/ ground effects was '88) In '89 the Sport Coupe became the RS. The motor would be a 5.0 TBI motor w/ a 700-R4. In '88 TPI was only in the IROCs. Also check out the spoiler. Alot of the '88 Sport Coupes had a 1 piece spoiler mounted on the decklid, instead of the familiar 3 piece wraparound spoiler... the camaro should look similar to this.

The RS started in limited quantities in 1987. It continued in 88, and was the only base model in 89-92. For an 88 car, if its a 5.0L, then its definitely TBI. Its also definitely a 700R4, unless it was replaced with something else. Its rated at 170 HP and 255 TQ, if you wanted to know.
