valve stem seals

Hey guys! I plan on changing my valve seals tomorrow and I wanted some tips from people that have done it.
The parts guy only gave me little black rings for the exhaust valves. He gave me little black rings and rubber cylinders with metal rings around them for the intake valves. Is that right?
Also, what does the best tool for taking off the springs look like? I would like to use the one that is easiest.
One more thing, how do I re-adjust the rocker arms after the springs are put back? I have the L98 engine in my 89 IROC. I think the lifters are hydralic-rollers from the factory if I'm not mistaken.
I have to drive 500 miles the day after tomorrow and I wanted to get this done before I leave. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks.

here's the new website for the Best Damn Garage on the Net - he has an article all about changing valve seals and setting valve lash. It's a great site and I'm glad someone finally posted where he moved to I had looked everywhere!

i'd say the umbrella seals are for the exhaust since thet take more abuse. i use both umbrella seals and the o ring type seals.

I'll differ with ede on the seal application... the umbrella seals go on the intakes, because that's where oil can leak into the engine the most because there's vacuum there constantly trying to suck oil past the guides. If the exhaust valve stem leaks, it will be in effect the same as blowby; exhaust gas, being at a higher pressure than the crankcase will leak that way, not so much oil leaking into the exhaust.
