Towing thirdgen with Uhaul Trailer

im looking to tow a thirdgen through a state or two and I was thinking about using a Uhaul trailer. I went to their online site and their automated system says that a thirdgen is too wide to tow using their equipment... this doesnt seem right.

Anyone use a uhaul trailer to tow a thirdgen?

Towing a 3rd gen

Yeah, i used one of those little two-wheel trailers to haul an 87 IROC. From Denver to LA. And they are right. There are 2 major problems:
1/ The ground effects won't get up on the trailer. You'll hit the nose before the wheels get up the ramp. We solved this by putting a thick board in front of the trailer ramps to make the nose go up higher
2/ Stock Tires (225/50/16 or 245/50/16) on the 3rd gen don't fit the wheel straps very well. They are so wide that the fitment is VERY touchy. And since having your car fall off the trailer running down the road is probably NOT on your list of things to do....if you MUST do this, put TWO retainer chains on the car, and check the tire straps after the 1st 5 minutes of driving, and EVERY stop thereafter. I had one of the straps almost slip off on me.

Also, if you are planning on using any tow-dolly, meaning the rear two of the car wheels are on the road, you gotta pull the drive shaft if it's an automatic tranny.

A full car carrier is preferrable for any car, but with the IROC's and their extra low ground clearance, and ground effects, getting them up on ANY trailer, or on car-ramps for that matter, is quite difficult.

dolly would work if you had the rear on it. i'd just pull a tape on my car and go to u haul place and measure a trailer. i know red had a ryder trailer for a 1st gen and it worked fine.

I was going to rent one of those sorry excuses for a trailer for a 300 mile trip. The ramps are long enough to put the car on it from my measurements, but I just couldn't stand how short the trailer was. There is no way to adjust how much tongue weight you want by where you position the car. I have a 96 Ford diesel and I like to have more than the recommended 10% of gross wieght on the tongue. I found a better trailer and a better price from our local trailer sales place. If this is a round trip look into that, if it's one way then your kinda stuck with U-Haul.

theres 3 trailers that i know of that are the "same size"

my 82 camaro would not fit on one of them... it fit on the other one, and i dont know if it would fit the 3rd, but its close.

you will need boards to get more space to get up the ramps...

if you're using the dolly (i HATE thoes) and you have wide rims on, you need to swap tires to some smaller ones so it fits in the cup in the dolly...

Where's a good place to rent a full car trailer? I'm picking up the GTA this weekend and don't know how the wheel bearings are. I want to be safe so was going to put it on a car trailer. I don't think U-Haul rents them?
