What is the point of gear drive?

What is the point of gear drive?

Is it more reliable and accurate or do guys just use them to sound cool?

All of the above...

You do not have any slack between the gears so it makes it more accurate. You will notice less jumping of the timing mark when you doing timing. The line on the is perfectly straight when you set timing.

And the whine noise is partially machined into the gears and partially just from two gears meshing together.

I have had a gear drive on my car for years and I have never had a problem.

Another good point is that you never have to worry the chain jumping a tooth.
