Engine buildup cam questions

Ok guys I havent posted much but I have a few questions. I am getting ready to do a 383 tpi buildup. I am using 6" rods, vortech heads and hopefully a super ram intake. If not a modified tpi setup. My question is this. I have the oppurtunity to get a killer deal on a cam setup it is a comp cams billet roller. Specs are as follows:
intake exhaust
Valve adjustment 22 24
Gross Lift 609 609
Duration @ .020" 292 292

Valve Timing open closed
@ .050"
intake 22 btdc 54 abdc
exhaust 57 btdc 25 abdc

Installed
intake exhaust
Duration @ .050" 264 264
lobe lift 405 405
lobe sepperation 106

These are the numbers on the card in the original box. The guy is also throwing in a set of full roller rockers at 1.5 ratio. Let me know what you guys think? Does it sould like it would work good with a tpi setup? Also if you are real knowledgeable with this stuff will I have to run a stall convertor? Also what stall?

Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a solid roller. Actually looks similar to a cam I used to have in my 383 when it was a drag motor, non FI.

I would let that deal pass you by unless you want a very nasty, not very streetable engine. You can of course use a cam like that in a street engine, TPI, but you will need extensive computer modification. Also with a cam that size in order to really have the engine working well, bigger heads and an intake like a Stealth Ram or Mini Ram would really be needed to make get the power out of it.

Depending on what you want to do, that cam me be just for you. If you are looking for high RPM HP with no regard for street ability, then your in like Flynn. If you are going for a more street oriented engine, find a different cam.

Just my opinion...

That cam is exactly the cam you DON"T want.

Find a cam with 206 to 222 degrees duration @.050"
ground on 112-114 LSA

Way to big for the street and especially TPI(unless burning chips), by most peoples standards. Ive lived in Midland, MI for 25 years, and am in OH to goto school. My father has a similar cam 264 dur @.050 and .624 lift in his 355 and it sets off car alarms everywhere it goes. Its VERY radical and doesnt produce enough vacuum for brakes.

Welcome to the boards!!

Further: Vortec heads would be a good choice but keep in mind a Super Ram manifold will not bolt up the these
heads. Vortecs have raised intake ports and a vortec specific manifold bolt pattern.

There is a TPI manifold made for vortec heads.
Ther are also vortec specific EFI manifolds
( GM RAMJET350) ( TPIS MINI-RAM III) Are two.

Modifying a conventional intake manifold to fit vortec heads is not recommended.

thanks guys

thanks for the info guys. One more question though. what about this cam makes it so wild the duration? or the lobe seperation angle? The lift with 1.5 ratio rockers seems kinda low. what gives? also would you recommend a zz4 roller? good prices on ebay. Also as far as the votech head and a tpi unit im plan to use scoggin dickey unit. it is a tpi base made for vortech heads. I plan on building a super ram clone out of aluminum sheet to top it off.

thanks again

About that cam, duration, LSA, and solid roller. None of that is really all about daily driven street engines. The biggest thing is the duration and LSA, that cam is designed to wind out...Something a TPI won't support very well.

You could, IIRC, use the Scoggin Dickey base with any other TPI parts, hence the Super Ram runners and plenum.

IF you want a good cam that has been very well proven with SUper Rams, look at the LPE 219 cam. www.lingenfelter.com
