code 32 -- hearing a bubble-hiss near EGR crossover??
i got a code 32 crusing around tonight...
code 32:
now, i had this a lil while ago.... about 5 months ago... i put a brand new EGR valve on it, and it went away...
before i go and replace the EGR valve, can anyone come up with a reason why it may be giving a 32? how is it suppost to "know" its a 32 anyway? what does it expect to see? to phrase it another way, what has to happen to trip this code?
ive noticed a high idle when its cold for the past 3 months, but to be honest, i dont care since it "seals" back up when its warm... im assuming its a extremly slight vac leak, but this motor is getting swapped in a couple months, so im not too worried about a lil high idle.... however, it may have somthing to do with the code, so im mentioning it.
i havent checked it yet, but i have a feeling that my gas miliage is a lil lower then normal...... but i did just get new tires yesterday, so whatever number i come up with could be diffrent by a lil and not mean anything...
im also starting to feel a 2-3 shift slip, but thats in the trans, nothing to do with this as far as i know.... not to worried as im dropping a T56 in with the other motor.
ideas? since it mentions the "barometric pressure sensor" (MAP) im going out to go see if my vac leak is the line from the MAP to the manifold... any other ideas would be great though..
code 32:
Fault in barometric pressure sensor circuit OR
Fault in exhaust gas recirculation valve diagnostic switch OR
Fault in electronic vacuum regulator valve

ok heres a new one.
dead quiet garage... engine is still warm since i walked in, did the above post, walked out, and took the air cleaner off...
im hearing the wierdest sound from the EGR area....its like... water dripping on a hot area... it has that boil-hiss to it...... like hearing a lil bubble of gas and then a hiss of it when it hits hot metal..
it sounds like its coming from the pass side of the throttle body (TBI btw) just infront of the EGR valve... like where the crossover is...
its a very soft light sound.. i mean the ticking of the hot motor is alot louder then it...... but i can clearly hear it when my ear is next to the area..
what is it!?

engine coolent is still a very nice heathy green... no smell of combustion or anything unusual... no brown spots or anything..
athough i noticed when i took the cap off, the pressure didnt seem that high... heh. i donno...
help? :lala:

Heh... second post in a row pertaining to egr.
The ecms test for the EGR is as follows:
When the following is met,
vehicle speed above 50 mph
vacuum between 12-15 inHg
throttle position constant
the ecm will shut the egr valve and look for a change in the map readings. If the map doesnt fall when the egr is closed, the ecm sets a code 32.
If you have an aftermaket exaust, it can cause problems if the egr is of the type that needs backpressure to open. If there is insufficent backpressure, the valve will not open when the egr solenoid is activated, and the ecm will set a code.

well i was crusing between 35 and 45 all night.. but i suppose i could have been going 50 in a 45..... was a pretty constant speed...
i doubt its my exhaust (even though it doesnt have much if any backpressure) simply because its worked for the past few months without a problem.
how do i check this EGR solenoid?

Looking at the schematics, the solenoid is fed by +12 volts at the 'B' terminal and the 'A' terminal is grounded by the ecm to activate the solenoid. I would assume that hooking +12 volts to the 'B' terminal and grounding 'A' would activate the solenoid and it should then pass vacuum.

mmk, im going to pull it off and hook it to a hand held vac pump when i get home tonight.... (after i go over and barrow someones vac pump....
)so it should hold a vac until i give power to it, then open.. right?
is it sealed so i can spray some carb cleaner in there if theres gunk/carbon, or would that foobar it?
**goes online to look up cost of this silinoid...**
hmm, hey BTW, does this hold a vac completly, or should it allow a lil creep?
edit:
from www.partsamerica.com
Retail Price: $41.94
Our Price: $27.99
You Save: $13.95
Niehoff Ignition FE9018 or Borg Warner EGR232 -same part, same price..

I dont know if id use any harsh cleaners on it, it may damage the internals or break down the plastic. Try it and see if it actuates properly.

I had the same problem with my 91 Z28 355CID. I changed the EGR valve at the time I did my intake/heads and cam etc. with no change. The EGR code 32 came back while at highway cruises. I took the solonoid out and bought a new one. I compared the two and noticed that the old vacuum port was way way more restricted. I installed the new one and havent seen the light since. My bet is you have the same problem as what I had. Part was cheap $60 CDN and took literally 5 minutes to change.
