Spark plug boot stuck

Changed out 7 of 8 plugs yesterday. Could not get the boot off plug from cylinder #2 (second plug from front on pass side?). Its a straight boot. I had a hard time getting the boot off another plug. Yanked on it too hard and pulled the wire out of the boot with the metal conductor still attached to the end of the plug (and yes I was pulling on the boot the whole time). Did not want to revisit the same scenario with the other plug so I just left it alone.

I tried to pry off the boot, but its so damn hard to get any leverage underneathe the 305.

Any ideas. I have new plug wires/boots coming in a few days, so I don't mind completely destroying the old wire trying to get it off. Any ideas? Maybe I should just cut through the boot.

Twisting the boot before and during the pulling makes a world of difference in removing the wires. Give that a shot.

Try some liquid wrench spray under the lip of the boot, let it sit and then twist until you can rotate the boot on the plug then it should pull off.

Two words.

Razor Knife.

Run that up the side of the boot....it'll fall off.

remember to put a little silicone grease inside the new boot, so this never happens again.

Yeah..I've been using dielectric grease on the new plugs. I'm prob just going to cut it off when I get my new spiral core wires. I've done a ton of things to cars but I've never changed the plugs out before. Definately a learnign experience. I just realized the other day that the plugs I got were gapped to .030....I didn't gap them to .035 before installation...so now I've got to pull them all again and gap them and re-install them. Oh well..at least I'm learning and saving $90 from not having a shop do it.

I agree with RJR... put a TON of grease inside those boots. Those little packets that come with plug wires are never enough. I even smear some extra dielectric on the ceramic of the spark plug for more insurance.

My first set of MSD 8.5mm wires tore the boots! The wires were fine, but the lastmost 1/4 inch tip of the boots stayed glued to the plugs... and I had put a thin film of dielectric on there. MSD fixed 'em for free (I love that company) for me. Since then, it's been 4 MSD wire sets later, and I over-do the dielectric like crazy, and it's never happened again.
