Here is a fine example of why, when you add aftermarket parts, to SPEND THE EXTRA CASH and go with hardened pushrods. My valve guides are hardened and I didnt realize it, so they sawed through the pushrods. Every single pushrod has similar wear, but this one finally broke off. It'll be another month and a couple hundred dollars before the car is on the road again.

 

On the bottom is a piece of the valve guide that broke when the pushrod snapped.

 

I assume you mean "guide plate", as in pushrod guide plate.

Don't suppose you have self-aligning rockers...

 

I thought Fords were shaft mounted rockers.

 

it's pretty much common knowledge that you need hardened push rods with guide plates. like five7 said are you mixing SA and non-SA parts?

 

you end up fragging anything else on the motor because of that?



heh, just to see, id cut open the oil filter and see how much metal made it around your oil system...

 

you can get the "blue racer" pushrods by crane wich are hardend for like $25

 

Yes, I meant pushrod guideplates, not valve guides....it was late and I was tired... Lol, I posted 'valve guides' on every single tech board too so this is like the 4th '"my bad" I've had to type out today.

I'm pretty sure the rockers aren't a self-aligning type. And they're stud-mounted full rollers w/ poly locks.

As far as common knowledge...yeah, well it was common knowledge that the mechanic in charge of building my motor didn't seem to know. He washed his hands clean of the whole deal and won't even work with me, so he just lost all my business and recommendations.

I haven't had a chance to drain the oil, but after I buy the pushrods, etc., we're gonna drain the oil, cut the filter open, and drop the pan... I hope I'm not gonna have to do another total rebuild, because I can't afford it. The motor is brand new for all intents and purposes and cost me a fortune to get together. If I DO have to rebuild though, it's probably gonna get some forged pistons and bored and stroked to a 331.

Oh and so I don't get yelled at....I know this is a F*rd motor and it doesn't belong here, but I figured I'd post this up as a nice reminder as to what can happen when you mix and match wrong parts.

btw if he built your motor, id REALLY bitch at the guy.... i mean he should ATLEAST buy new hardened pushrods for ya..

 

I chewed him out for it...all he basically said was "well you guys bought the parts, I just put it together" so I said "well the least you could've done is told us we needed hardened pushrods" and he was like "well you guys didnt build that motor right, i told you 50 thousand other things you shouldve put on that motor and didnt"...and he tried to compare the need for hardened pushrods to the "need" for an AFPR. Which I didn't need, but I bought 2 months later anyways for fine tuning. He's an @$$hole and lost my business.
