rough running
rough running
Over the past year my Z (92 w/305 5-speed) has been troubling me. Randomly, usually after shifting from reverse to first, or taking off in first from a stop, my car starts running very rough. It starts idling roughly, and will die if I don't keep it running with the gas pedal. If I push in the clutch at any speed the RPMs will drop until it dies. The sound also changes to where it almost sounds like cam lope. Usually if I rev it a few times or get on it hard, it will reset itself and be fine. But sometimes it will last for a few miles and then go away. I have taken it to my mechanic a couple times, but it never does it when he drives it, so he doesn't know where to look. It seems to be worse in cold weather too. I'm getting tired of it and would like some opinions on what it could be. Also the SES light randomly comes on when I drive on the highway for awile, but never when the car is acting up. There is a small rusted hole where the inlet pipe comes into the muffler, and I wondered if exhaust gases might have anything to do with it. The car has 80k miles and is great otherwise. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
my car did the exact same thing for about 2 months before it finaly quit going above 2800 rpm... but hell.. it don't die while idleing anymore.. but then i can't drive it either..
I noticed when my car did it, that it only occured after driving it around slowly for a while, like when driving around our mall at like 10mph.. after letting it sit for about half an hour it seemed to go away..
hopefuly it don't lead you to the same problem that I have.. nobody seems to know what it is

My automatic likes to do this when I first start it up. I'm replacing the IAC. Every now and then it wont start, and when I finish cranking, I hear a funny noise like a little motor trying to work. This is why I suspect the IAC.
