alright, i have heard of maing a 350 into a 383 and all sorta of stuff. How the hell do you turn a smaller engine into a larger engine.
Does this mean that i can make my 305 into a 350, or a 383? Why couldn't I? I'm not exactly a noob at engines but i used to knwot hat you couldn't do this but some forums completely got me confused.

Basically you turn a small engine into a bigger engine by putting bigger parts in it. Crank and pistons mainly. It's called boring and stroking.
With a 305 you would probably want to start with a block that has a larger bore, the next (practical) available size is 4" bore, that would make it a 350. Or you could go to a 4.125" bore and with the crankshaft you have it would become a 377.
Somewhere there's a link to a site that shows all the bore/ stroke combos.
A SBC can range from 262ci to 434ci maybe more, and externally none of the dimensions will have changed.
To build a 383 you start with a 4" bore block, bore it +.030, use a 3.75" stroker crank. If you wanted to do that, there are very few internal parts from a 305 that could be reused, other than the rods and some hardware.

Its is a bit confusing especially when you go into different ways to make larger displacment stroker setups. You cant make the 305 a 350 well you could if you had gotten the correct crank/rods and bore but they dont make such a setup as far as I know. You can bore your 305 out and use a 400 crank to make a 334 but your still lacking the cubic inches of a 350 so its not worth it.
It would be nice if somone did list all the common ways to increase displacment but these new cranks they sell in every catalog take all the thinking out of it.
