Can't get engine to turn over

I cranked my car today when i was leaving work. I got about two blocks from work and my car shut down. I got it cranked again for about a minute then it died again. Now it won't start. I know it is not the alternator or battery because they new. ( i tried to jump it off). When i turn the key, it sounds like the motor wants to turn over but it won't( makes a thunk sound). Anybody got any ideas as to what is the problem?

I'm with Ed, I once bought three rebuilt alternators untill I got a good one. Also, recheck all your connections.

i just bought the battery and the alternator from an auto parts store. the alternator came straight out of the box when i put it on the car. Thats why i don't think they are the problem. any more suggestions?

I would say check the spark plugs. I replaced mine and it started right up. Put some dry gas in it too. See if that helps.

Rebuilt alternators still come in a box. Just a side note. If you put a new/rebuilt alternator on dead battery you can kill the alternator pretty quick.
