Vortec heads on a 383

I just want to know if anyone is doing this...and what you think about it. Are these heads a good choice to feed this motor? Can they support the capabilities of a 383 if ported a little? or would it be wiser to just go with AFR's or something???

I had the vortec heads on my 350 and I am convinced that they are perfect for most any small block street machine. GM uses the vortec heads on a high torque crate motor the puts out around 330 horsepower and something like 400 lb-ft. I could be wrong, I don't have the catalog in front of me. Any way vortecs will be fine as long as you don't expect too much from them horsepower wise. They don't flow as well as many of the aftermarket street small block offerings. That said pocket porting the heads has shown only 20 horsepower and they don't respond at all to larger valves. I would recomend some AFR 190 or 195 heads. They are what I drool over now. Stab in a comp 268h cam with those heads and your engine should really rock!

So as not to ruffle anyone's feathers, I'm going to send you some head flow numbers that I've amassed over time.

Most of these were done by GM High Tech Performance mag and extreme pains were taken to insure the tests were fair to all.

Take a look at the flow numbers of the Vortec heads and compare them with others that were flowed with the same exacting setup of the flow bench.

Check for the port stall point of the Vortec's and how well they flow above .400 valve lift.

You can then be the judge.

Hope this helps.

Jake

A friend of mine did this very thing, except his setup was carburated (650 DP). That baby screams; set up was a sanp. I think he used the Performer intake. But it's sweet.

As long as you don't get to radical in the cam area, and pull the motor to extremely high RPM's, they will be ok.

Some of the circle track cars around here run vortec heads. They rev them to 8000+rpm. They are ported as much as possible run larger valves, better springs, etc.... Of course, they run vortec heads because they are required to run GM casting iron heads. But it's nice to know they potential exists.
On your 383 in stock form, they will produce excellent torque with lots of low-end and mid range power up to 5000-5500 rpm. Build the rest of the engine to match the powerband of the stock vortec heads and you will have a sweet street motor that won't need a high stall converter and/or deep gears to launch hard.

The Vortec Heads will work Great on a 383, they will run out of steam around 5200-5500 rpm. lots of midrange power. If you want It to pull higher than that your going to need Lots of work to the heads, in which case you'd be better off finding Differnt heads
