A friend of mine has a 84 camaro that we are trying to get running. We cant get the key to turn. The steering wheel moves but sounds like it is still locked. It makes a grinding/cracking noise when turned. I think something happened to it while being towed. Also you can shift through gears all the time. If anyone knows how we can fix this please let me know. We are on a limited budget and would like to at least get it moving.

I know it's probably a silly question, but are you certain you have the correct key?

If so, there's not much to do short of removing th esteering wheel and exposing the ignition lock cylinder for removal.

Have you tried to turn the lock backward to the ACC position?

 

maybe that spring for the steering lock broke and is jammed. that seems to be happening lately. happened to me. probably gonna have to tear the steering wheen apart either way.
