is timing importain?

i had a firend help me install a new distributor, and he told me you time it by twisting the cap around till it idles right, and iv knoticed its alot slower, was it timed right? how much power do you think ill get back when i get it timed right?

It is very important! The only way to get it right is to time it with a light. I got my mac timing gun on ebay for like $8. It's a valuable tool.

so basicly my car will be much faster then it is now if i get it timed?

chould it be affecting my gas mileage to? also does not haveing mufflers just a car affect gas milage?

maybe even more important than setting the timing is not letting your "friend" work on your car because it's pretty clear he doesn't know much and isn't doing you any great favors.

a motor will idle pretty damn smooth with 25 degrees advance (mine did) and i couldnt figure out for the life of me why i spark knocked...28 degress base+21 degress advance+18degress of vacuum advance=to many degress ....my problem was a WHOOOOLLE lot different then yours is, but in order to get it to run right you need a timing light and a friend with common sence...not that im a model of it myself ..i set the base to 10 degress 21 advance and 18 vacuum...

what distributor did u get?......
