TICKING...did something fall in?

GREETINGS
I just did the old fashioned new carb and aluminum intake swap from the stock. Now there is a terrible ticking noise. what I would first like to do is eliminate is the possibility that something fell in the intake or the ports during the swap. Im always careful and stick in a rag(so please spare lectures) but iwas usin a swivel on a small butterfly impact and it flew apart, I found the two parts but not the pin. i heard a clinking sound but i think it was just one of the parts hitting the outside of the intake. part of the rag I noticed had been blown up by the exhaust from the air tool, but it at no point made any noise like something dropped IN. anyways I never found the pin. now there is a tick ! Ive never heard an engine run with something in it before could anyone describe the sound or what the symptoms would be like after running. the tick isnt super fast it could correspond with something that happens every 2nd or 4th stroke. it does it at idle and with RPM in and out of gear. it does go away some times but not under any conditions in particular totally intermittent.--in the past I have broken tips off screw drivers in plug holes and got them out with magnets this one is a little hard toget to so I i havent got a magnet in there yet but that might not pull whatever is in there out anyway IF there is anything inthere could the tick also be something else i just put in new spark plugs too and notice one of them was groundin to the exhaust but i moved it and it stopped I thought maybe it might be doing it somwhere else maybe hard for me to see. but the tick seems to be too loud to be a spark it almost sounds like a ping but i have never heard a car ping at idle usually just under load. it doesnt seem to be anything rattling or an exhaust leak or anything and there wasnt any lifter or valve train tick before the swap. other than the tick the car has been running well for two days Im starting to wonder if something got in there wouldnt I have noticed a differance in the performance of the motor by now.I pondered the notion for a minute that maybe I got some debris in a lifter when i had the manifold off, but could it go bad instantly like that--------ANY SUGGESTIONS OR STORIES WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED SORRY FOR THE LENGTHY READ BUT i WOULD LIKE TO PRESENT ALL FACTS -IVE TORN APART LOTS OF SMALL BLOCKS AND IVE NEVER HAD THIS PROBLEM BEFORE MY RESOURCES ARE VERY LIMITED AND I WOULD LIKE TO ELIMINATE ALL POSSIBILITIES BEFORE I GO AND TEAR THE WHOLE THING DOWN.

THANK YOU

Might be as simple as a lifter or an exhaust leak. How does the oil pressure look? If the oil pressure's OK I doubt that the ticking is due to the pin.

Put a magnet on the oil pan for awhile and check it the next time you change the oil. If the pin fell into the valley it will probably end up in the pan eventually.

If it fell into an intake port the damage is already done if you've been driving it for two days. The valve seats, cylinder walls, and rings on the affected cylinder are candidates for damage. Do a compression check on all cylinders and see how they look.
