Unusual engine clatter

Recently when the engine is under load (cold) it has the clicking noise (kinda like detonation), yet everything checks out ok, new spark plugs cap, rotor, wires. I don't know if the 89 LO3's have a knock sensor. But one the engine is hot the knocking goes away. But If I shut the engine off for a couple of minutes, the knocking is back for a while. I'm getting no error codes, everything on the engine is stock. And the timing is right on. Any ideas? the car is in storage right now, but I'm thinking of looking at the o2 sensor.. I've read quite a few things relating to this sensor.. Thanks

almost sounds like a hydraulic lifter. you said it was when it was under load, well does it do it when it is at a cold idle? i dont think lifters change much depending on the load, so if its clicking when its under load but not at idle, then it may be a misfire.

Reply 1: no at a cold idle it fine, if it's a miss fire, I wonder where the problem could be.. since it's had a full tune up..

Reply 2: It does have one.. where is it? I couldn't locate it, I even taped on the block to try and simulate detonation, and the engine didn't make any adjustments in the timing for it. Thanks

The knock sensor is on the passenger side of the block. It's right along the edge of the oil pan seal.

Ok, thanks guys.. I'll check for the sensor, and see if it's toast.. it could be detonation. If I have any more problems, I'll post again.. since the car is in storage.
