You could be using oil because:

a) your rings are worn (high mileage engine)
b) valve stem seals are leaking (can happen to a low mileage motor)
c) obvious leaks on the ground (oil filter not sealed correctly, front or rear mains leaking excessively, etc.)

Which one seems to be more likely for your situation?

it a from high miles. i just want to know who bad it is for the engine does it mean it is at the end of its life. it has about 100k on it. and it still has power it whips ur head back when you get on it. so I'm just curious? and how many miles can you get out of an engine. my has been raced a lot. Also it regulary came out of an late 80s corvette.
any ideas would be helpful.
thanx

Run a compression test. Do it with the engine at normal operating temp. After checking compression dry, give the cylinders a shot of oil down the spark plug hole, and check them again. If pressure comes up, your rings are worn. If the pressure doesn't change, your rings are ok. If your pressure is ok, and you have no sign of worn rings, make sure your pcv valve works. If it is the valve guide seals leaking, you can replace them without removing the heads, if you have an air compressor.
