torque arm question
can somebody tell me what the torque arm is for or what it actually does and if i really need it. why do only some cars have it ? i switched my tranny from the 700r4 to a turbo 350 and i was wondering if there was a way to hook the torque arm back up without buying that kit from b & m. can it be welded ?

Car: yep
Engine: uhuh
Transmission: sure does
The torque arm keeps the pinion angle correct. Without it the rear end would spin straight up into the floor board.
If the pinion angle isn't right it could cause other problems. (u-joint failure, pinion bearing load, etc.)
I would definatly do it the right way, you should buy the kit.

JH,
The torque arm limits the twisting forces of the rear axle when you accelerate and brake. Without it, the rear LCAs, shocks, and springs will take all the stress. First, you can expect the panhard rod to twist, then the springs to fall out of their perches, then teh car will settle on the shocks and put a couple of nice dimples in the rear cargo compartment floor. Finally, the LCAs will fail, tearing loose from the floor pan mounts.
Enough to make you want to get it hooked up yet?
