uhoh.... Did i just mess up my timing when i swap the timing chain????

I swapped out the crank in my 305 about 3 months back and when i reassembled i had the #1 piston at TDC. I lined the crank's timing gear up to the cam gear (with the dots which did not move)... Now my question is Does the cam turn twice for each turn of the crank?? If so could my timing be off by 180 degrees??? Any way to check easily? the engine is sitting back in my car with nothing hooked up to it yet.. Please tell me i didn't do somethin stupid...lol

no, i believe the crank turns twice for every single turn of the cam, but yeah the cam could still be off. with the #1 piston at TDC and the timing gear marks lined up both the valves for that cylinder should be shut, and as the crank is turned and the piston reaches BDC the exhaust valve should open.

the way i do timing chains is to install the gears dot to dot, or crank gear at 12:00 and cam gear at 6:00 with the #1 piston at TDC. then you want to spin it 1 time and have both dots on both gears at 12:00. then drop the distributor in with the rotor pointing to #1 post on the cap.

I lined the crank dot at 12:00 and the cam gear at 6;00... so does that mean that they are right??

They're right. But the piston is at TDC on the exhaust stroke so you need to turn the motor over 1 full turn to get the piston to TDC on the intake so you can drop the distributor in.

i like the dot to dot because it's easier to see that the dots are lined up ,then i spin the engine to install the distributor. to me it would be too easy to have something out of line if the dots were both straight up.
