Weird smell

Today, I drove from my home town to my college. It is a 45 minute drive, all highway. When I parked, I smelled something funny. It seemed to be coming from the back of the car.... from either wheel well. It was a strong smell, similar to the smell of burning rubber, but not quite. Anyone have any ideas of what this is coming from???

Kinda, maybe, sounds like the rear end fluid. That stuff stinks. But something would have to have gone wrong for that to be the case.

I was really afraid that it was possibly the rear end fluid, becuase I would imagine that if the rear end fluid is burning, then something is definetly wrong with it. I hope that is not the case. Guess I should change it and see what's inside...??

Brakes smell like hot clutch ( same matieral ), Gear oil smells like sulpher. If your losing a wheel seal and it's getting on your brakes it will smell after use. I'd pull the wheels and look at the shoes. You'll be able to tell if thats it.

Just throwing in another option... if your tires aren't balanced well or alignment is off enough, it'll wear your tires badly, which will smell like the tires burning... if you were driving on the highway though (assuming you were doing 70mph or more) you'd definitely notice the car shaking if it was the tire balance.. if it was the alignment, more than likely the tires would be worn on one of the edges more than the rest, depending on how long it's been like that. if not, then I suppose you should go back to the previous replies.
