Will This Cam Work?
Will This Cam Work?
I need to pick a cam for my engine, but I am not sure if the one I want will work. The block is a 350 block from a 1970 truck. I was wanting the CompCams Xtreme 270 hydraulic roller cam, but it says the cam is for 87 and up engines. I want to use hydraulic roller lifters, but all the roller cams seem to be for newer engines. Can I use this cam on my engine? Will I need to fabricate anything if it won't work? Or would it just be better to go with normal hydraulic flat tappet lifters? This is going on a 383 with head ID# 378246. Thanks for any advice you provide!

They make 2 series of Xtreme rollers, one is the "retrofit", the other is for the factory's mutation.
If you want the 87-up grind rather than the "retro" grind, they can easily do that, it's only like $25 custom charge.
Look on their web page fartehr down in the cam spec list. I think you'll find the other cam. I have its big brother XR282HR in my 400.
All you will need is the correct timing set, a cam button, the roller lifters, and pushrods that are .400" shorter than flat tappet ones would be.
Those heads would actually be 3728461, double-humps, right?? If so, you're going to have to do some major work-around to make up for their lack of accessory bolt holes. They're good heads other than that, and of course their pre-emissions design that won't run on pump gas with the CR that you'll have.
