Harmonic Balancer question

(motor is a 1990 L98) Ive been trying to install the balancer for weeks now. I tried using a balancer installer tool, but the end of it just snapped inside the crankshaft. Today i tried banging it in with a wooden block and sledgehammer, with no luck. One thing i noticed is that the the crankshaft key is divided into 2 pieces, is that common? I need help!!! this thing has got to go in already!

the crank uses two keys one for the crank gear and one for the dampner, not a two piece key. i'd say the hole isn't round in the dampner. it should press on with just a little effort with the installer. i'd hone the dampner on a wrist pin machine or with a wheel cylinder hone and polish the crank snout. if you haven't yet you need to get the broken installer bolt out of the crank.

A little grease goes a long way too.
