Machine Work for Larger Valves
I understand that 1.94" intake is the largest that will work in a 305.
I want to take a set of Vortec L30 heads, and put 1.94" intake valves in....how much should I expect to pay for this at a machine shop?
Thanks,

look in the yellow pages under machine shops, or auto parts and call. prices change a great deal from one area to another.

The place I worked at we charged 12 per valve seat to replace and grind the seat. You are looking at about 10 bucks a valve. Thats 22 eachx8=about 175 smackers. Of course the price will vary depending on who you call. I havent seen a vortec head up close, so Im not sure the if the seat can be reused or not (meaning grind it out to the appropriate size). Sometimes its possible, like a 1.78 to 1.84 on brand F. Generally chevys have a narrow seat width, so it doesnt usually work. I'd imagine you are going 1.84 to 1.94, so that may be too much on those heads. Call a machine shop
I dont think theres anything to avoid besides super cheap parts and labor. In this case, you get what you pay for. Take a look at the shop and machines if they will let you. Look for lots of different jigs and stuff to setup the heads on. Lack of different jigs means they have universal junk they use on each part, which in my experience dont lead to very good results. Old machines are not necessarily bad, but broken ones or ones missing parts are. Ive seen some really bad repairs on machines before... scary. Ask around the local repair shops too as to who they use for machine work if you dont know of anyone.
