2 problems in 1 day!!

not sure if this is the right topic but,

#1. thought my battery died but it ended up being the starter. changed the starter and now i have nothing. i have a dome light and the normal lights that come on when you turn the key, but no fuel pump, no clicking sounds of a starter, not even a heater. could this be a fusible link coming off the starter that i might have just happened to finish off when i was playing with those wires?

#2. what is that plastic mushroom looking thing on the passenger side up by the front of the intake? it has a small plastic tube coming out of it that goes back somehwere by the firewall. i touched it and the little plastic tube snapped in half. kinda wondering if this might be where a vacuum leak that has been driving me crazy for 6 months might be. if it was, it has a big leak now but i cant get it started so i dont know. i cant tell where the tube goes. it goes in with the wiring between the firewall and the motor. possibly something to do with the tranny that might explain why i have no reverse until i warm up?

this week just keeps getting worse. and its only Tuesday.

btw, its an 87 iroc. 305 tpi

please help.
thanks!

I know this is a dumb question for you, but it has been known to happen. Did you put the wire with the small terminal on the post marked "R" or "S"?

On the second part of your post about the plastic mushroom looking thing. That is the heater control valve and if the plastic tube going to it is broke it could give you a vacuum leak. It also has nothing to do with the transmission. When was the last time you changed the filter and fluid in the transmission?
