Stock Engine Oil Cooler Coolant Flow
Stock Engine Oil Cooler Coolant Flow
Does it matter which direction coolant flows through the stock engine oil cooler on an '87 IROC?
Here's how my coolant hoses were connected when I got the car recently. (I'm referring to the hoses on the right side of the engine connected to the oil cooler pipes.)
The front oil cooler pipe was connected to the heater core effluent pipe, and the rear pipe was connected to the radiator. I believe this may have been how it was installed at factory, because it is 22,000 mile car that appears to have had nothing replaced since new. However, I have a GM diagram that shows the hoses reversed compared to my car.
Could my car possibly have a factory mixup?

I doubt it matters either. The coolant flow will still go from the heater core, across and under the engine to the "sandwich" cooler above the oil filter and then return back to the front of the engine and on into the radiator. The direction of the flow will still cause this to happen regardless of having the lines reversed, but the hose routing might look a little funny being hooked up backwards to the hose nipples at the front/pass. side of the engine.
