Best Cam for 305 lb9 with stock heads
my old 305 had the peanut cam and my new one does not ... the car is way slower... Just wanted to know which cams you guys thought would be a good step up from what I had since most have lifts over .500 which i know i can't use with the heads. it seems that 90% of the roller cams out there are for the 350's only. Any suguestions would be great ... thanks,

Kane,
You'll have to be aware that the speed-density system is a little less toleratnt of changes, so unless you want to use a custom PROM, you will be somewhat limited. Keep the LSA fairly wide and the problems should be minimal. Comp Cams offers several roller cams for your 305, some of which are designed for use with the stock ECM and PROM. The 08-300-8 has a 112° LSA, 0.450/0.480 lifts, and 206/210° duration @ 0.050" lifts. It should be better than the OE cam profile and still be compatible with the stock PROM.

That smaller SLP cam should work well. It worked in my friends 89 LB9 with only other mods being an American Thunder exhuast and a Random Tech converter. He is currently swapping in 3.73s. If I were you, I'd only use that SLP cam if you have 3.42+ gears.

First off, there is a debate raging on the peanut cammed LB9 SD cars. Many believe that all LB9s got teh good cam when they switched to SD, the power difference between G92 and non-G92 cars is due to the TBI exhaust manifolds and cat that we got. I personally am a believer in that theory. So is Rob P, who is running low 14s in a non-G92 305 5 speed 92 z vert with minimal mods. His performace seems improbable with the peanut cam.
Seems like you're whining about a different cam, do you have a new/rebuilt engine? If so, why didn't you put a cam in it in the first place silly. In fact, maybe your new motor has a peanut cam, and your old did not, hence the difference you feel.(edit: wanted to note that there is no worse SBC cam in existence than the infamous peanut. Even the ugliest 160hp smogger 350s in the 70s had a grind that was a near mirror of the peanut.)
Anyhow, a good choice for a stock headed LB9 is the comp XR 256. I'm between that and the XR 262 for mine. The first may work reasonably well with the stock chip, not optimal, but decent. Might be able to make it do really well with some folling around with MAP/TPS modifiers. The second will need PROM work.
I would not bother with the vader mentioned 206'/210' cam unless: 1-you are positive you have a peanut cam now (the L98 cam is very close to this cam, waste of effort to swap.) 2- you use this car as a pure daily driver and don't ever want to tune it or care about it's end all performance.
It would run pretty close to perfect with the stock programming (well, as perfect as the stock prgramming can be.)

I still don't buy that 91-92 all had the better cams thing. Not until MrJ pulls his cam out will I believe it.
Anyway, take a look at the Crane Compucams, 2032 and 2033 (I think they had a 33) roller cams. I'll have to look up the specs later and post, perhaps someone has em already. The next larger cam over the 2032 was right around the range I would want unless I'm mistaken. In my 305 TPI I had a 204/214 cam, you definitely can go a little bigger than that. I'd be aiming for roughly 210/220 w/ some .460ish lift. I think Willie was/is running the CompuCam I'm thinking of w/ good results. At least give the specs a peep...

I just finished installing Crane Compucams 2032 in my LB9. Haven't had a chance to drive it because of the winter. I'm also installing headers + cat-back at the same time so i won't be able to tell the difference to the cam i had. My stock cam was the 5500 redline L98 cam. Hope it works!

LoL believe what you will Ray... madmax already pulled his non G92 305 TPI cam and found an L98 cam. If I can get my hands on a decent aftermarket cam, I'll pull mine and measure it.
But a peanut cam isn't going to propel ANY virtually stock car to 94mph in the quarter.. thats the bottom line

Yeah but wasn't it some engine that was out of a car that madmax got somewhere MrJ?
I don't know all the facts w/ that engine and where it came from so I'm hesitant to jump on the cam thing.
That's why I'll withhold believing it untill your car or one like it has it's cam pulled, or until I madmax removes all doubt about his engine...
I hope you're right because it'll mean thousands of auto 305 TPIs were spared the curse that is the peanut cam...

Im not even sure mine was a peanut - but i can tell you one thing I could beat the early lt1's all day long - I put all my exhaust on when i had the thing rebuilt and my car feels less torquey than my parent minivan - i've spent $1500 on replacing to much to list since then - I guess it just comes down to the fact that my new engine is a POS. - im hopeing i can fix this with a cam swap (hopefully)

one more thing is I got the car at an auction over 4 years ago - so who knows it may have been an already swapped 350... All i know is my car is now slower than a v6 stang
... since I've had punks at my college mess with me at times - and i still think my car is fast way down deep ... but alas my car fails me and fails me bad... Then i take it personaly (since I've put over $4000 into it in the last 2 years and kick my self for not doing what i wanted to in the first place (383) oh well .. ill stop my bitching now

Ray, the engine that Madmax has now is out of a non-G92 91 Z28.
kane91Z... this same exact thing happened to Bill91Z. His original 305 TPI **** the bed. That engine ran a 14.4 almost bone stock. He had a new GM 305 swapped in, and after that had a very hard time even getting back into the 14s. I think his old engine was L98 cammed, and the new one wasn't.

well almost 2 years later and I have an update -
I ended up getting the 2032 for the 305 - the install seemed to go flawlessly - I let me best friend remove my harmonic balancer - turns out the tip of the removal tool busted off inside my crank - many more problems then occurred trying to remove said stupid piece of metal stuck in crank... had by then thrown over 4500$ at the damned 305 in a one year period - my health failed and I could no longer work - ( still can't really
) my friend gave me his 89 grand am since he also has his grand national and was going to sell it for 700$ any ways. - saved up money for a year - enough to buy a l98 - but went to Europe instead
- eight months later brings us to present time - where as I purchased an l98 - going to stick the 2032 in it and pray the TQ doesn't blow up my WC T5 thus screwing me again...
though I have been greatly impressed by the quad 4 in the grand am ( thing ran a 15.01 ) i miss my tpi

HAH - sorry for the double post
just reflecting how dumb I was when I originally made this post ( even though I had the car for nearly 3 years already)
I measured the lobes of the cam that was in the 305 (rebuild) it was indeed the dreaded peanut
- on a brighter note however this disaster made me learn 10 times more about my car than I had previously
also with the car sitting in my driveway I've had 4 different people try and buy it - one guy came back 3 times - offering me 10 -15 - then 18 thousand - If I didn't have the other car im sure I would have taken the offer dude to necessity - I declined however - my friends/family thought I was insane - but I got the car under almost magical circumstances - I realized if I bought another car I wouldn't care nearly as much about it - I had also made a pact with myself how I would never sell the car ever when I got it - its my favorite possession and had brought me so many good times I figured no amount of $$ can replace that...
I can completely understand how many of you will not agree w/ my logic :sillylol:
