Ok. I have an 86Z with a manual tranny. It had the 305. But It an an L98 from an 86 vette.

I went to napa. The guy said they make 2 starters for 86 one for auto and one for manual.

But for 87 its the same starter...

Will a 305 starter start a 350?

please advise...

Use the 86 manual starter. Should be the same as the 87 all one.

 

flexplate/flyweel diameter differnences is why

you cant use a large flywheel starter on a small flywheel engine

or other way around either

 

Im pretty sure i got the right one. This one is suppose to fix and 86 305 an 87 350 and 86 vette 350. So I think im ok.

So how hard is it to change a starter?

Can someone give me the proper steps?

Sure
1. Disconnect the battery
2. Block the rear tires, jack the front of the car up.
3. Set on jackstands.
4.Remove wires from back of starter. (lable , or remember wich went where)
5. Remove the bottom- most bolts from the starter, then the top
Remove starter.

Install in reverse except put the top bolts in the starter first.
Hopefully you wont need to do any shimming to adjust. Ive never had to.

Now the disclaimer...dont get squished....I have no money you cant sue (sp) me. taken me 2yrs to get my car ready

 

I tried to get this off once before. It seems i can't get the wires off. is it eaiser to drop the starter than the wires?

I always pulled the wires first for fear of braking one off when the starter comes down. Wich can be kinda sudden some times. if the wires are too short to let the starter come down, wich I have ran into..its kinda heavy to try to hold up while working on the wires. Maybe if you had a block or something ready to set the starter on when it comes down..you could try...

 

a couple other options: remove exhaust manifold and the you have open access to the solenoid

or use a long extension 1/4" drive all the way almost to fuel pump, for the solenoid wire stud nut, might evne have to remove fuel pump, if is not FI engine that is,.
