Engine drives at WOT,or, how to make friends with trees

Ok here's my situation:
A while back, my engine kept getting stuck in WOT mode, when i would give it a little extra gas for a fast move off the line. It would rev to redline, then i'd cut it off, while in traffic.
So i bought a new acellerator cable thinking this was my problem. The car behaved well for 2 weeks or so, and then did it again, but this time i watched the engine rev to 6000+ RPM, on my stock LG4, so i said i've seen enough, kill ignition. This does not happen every single time, but once every two weeks, or lifetime is too much.

Remedies:
I have replaced the acellerator cable
I removed the Cruise control cable (after most recent incident, hasn't reproduced situation, yet?!)
Inspected Throttle Return spring for binding, it is fine

Is it one of the things listed above, or something like a motor mount, or is it time for a new carburetor? Thanks.

PS. I have a mirror post in the carburetor board, and that board is too slow...

Could be the carb... If the shaft is worn, it could bind and the spring wouldnt be able to pull it shut. Ive seen it happen, but its not common. Open up the throttle by hand (engine off) and mess around with it and see if you can make it bind at all.

Don't know much about carbs but I wonder if the secondaries aren't sticking open. Not sure if you have vacuum or mechanical secondaries but this could be the problem.

This is just a BIG shot in the dark, but here ya go...
Something similar like this was happening to mine. It would redline and not shift until I let off the gas. Someone said to it was my valve body in my tranny . I have not fixed it yet but I am just easier on the flooring the pedal.

Thanks for the advice. I've looked into the possiblity of the secondaries sticking open, since they are mechanical. The situation had it's chance to reoccur, since I raced tonight (78 Trans Am, 400 SB, kill) So I think it may have been as simple as the cruise control. If this reoccurs, i'm going to slap a Holley on.

Thanks!

PS: Also discovered how accurate the term "Quadrabog" is!!! Off the line sucks!

Had a similiar situation with a Hyundai(Korean for: Ford) Stellar(hey, at least it was a rear-driver). Traced the prob to ice build-up on the throttle cable(obviously not the source of your problem).

During one particularly scary occurrence, -mildly slick winter mountain road, passing a semi, with a sharp right-hander approaching, steep cliff on the left- I decided to downshift. I figured it was better to trash the tranny than trash me. Well, this was enough to release the frozen cable, and a quick shift back to 5th prevented any engine damage. In this particular situation, shutting off the engine, and losing steering control, was not an option.

The first time this happened to me was in traffic. I was coming out of an intersection where my lane has to merge. Gramma in a Crown Vic was in front of me and i was redlining. I couldn't shut down, and had to wait a minute or two before i could pull over. That sucked, i hate when that happens.

EDIT: It happened again today, twice! That Quadrajet is soOOOOO gone! It will die in 2 weeks.

I guess if you've replaced all the throttle cable and the spring then we'd have to go with throttle shaft binding...but like I said in previous posts you've made, that's a last resort because it's the most costly and most rare.

Just FYI, no bad-blood or anything, but quadrabog refers to the Q-jets transition into the secondaries, and if this is a stock LG4 Q-jet those are vaccum controlled secondaries.

I'm going to check out anything that might bind the accelerator pedal before i plop down the cash, and double check everything too. That bogging is downright embarrasing in a racing situation. But then again, the car picks up quick after about 30 feet!!!
Kills it off the line

I had a throttle stick on the ISU Formula SAE car, IN A PARKING LOT!! Scare the bejesus out of me. The cable problem could be, but probably isn't, a bad ground. I've heard of speedometer cables getting screwed up this way, maybe throttle cables can too. BTW, Q-jets are not vacuum secondaries. They are mechanical secondaries with an AIR DOORs on them that open with pressure. For proof you can push open the air doors and floor the throttle by hand, (may have to mess with some of the prevents on the pass. side of carb) with the engine off.

I like Madmax's idea; unhook the accelerator cable and see if you can get the carb to stick at WOT. You might need to warm the car up for this...?

Is the linkage hitting the air cleaner?

Thanks for all your help guys, but it still does it. On Sunday it did it to me twice while driving my mom to Church!!!! So, for safety's sake, i'm getting a new carb. Ditching the computer too. Now i'm in control!
