Funny story with interesting question

The funniest thing happened today. I have a remote start feature on my car and I started it up from inside my office right before lunch today (to let it warm up).

Well, it was in 1st gear and the car started, jumped two huge-a$$ curbs, drove right in between the office building and a row of trees without hitting a thing, and through a large lawn into a creek!!!! I about **** my pants when I saw what was happening.

Anyways, how can I rig up a safety switch to my shifter to make it impossible to start the car when it is in gear?

I have thought about a magnetic switch that will only allow the car to start when the shifter is in neutral.

What do you suggest? Anything.

I don't know about the switch, but try getting in the habbit of using the e-brake. With it on, it should be to hard for the motor to start.

Right..

My ebrake was set, but it needs some adjustment cause it will barely hold the car when it is on a steep grade.

I've never heard of anybody putting a remote start on a manual car. I didn't even know they offered it. Anyways, I don't know if you would be able to do this, unless you had something to engage the clutch.

I put the automatic start on it when it had the 700R4 in it and I just kept it in there when I did the 6speed swap.

Push in the clutch? The whole idea I am after is to rig up a switch of some sort that will only allow the car to start when the shifter is in the neutral position. Forget the neutral safety switch on the clutch pedal, thats not hooked up.

A guy at a local Car Stereo shop told me about some sort of magnetic switch I could use that would complete a circuit when the shifter is in the neutral position. When the car is in 1st, the shifter is moved over the the left and breaks the circuit(no start)

Has anyone done anything like this befor or know where I can get a switch like this?

It's called a magnetic reed switch. It's a 2 piece switch, one piece contains a magnet, the other side the contacts and a metal bar. You commonly see these used on doors and windows wired up to a burglar alarm. They also have a wide range of other applications, and come in various amperage ranges.

Any decent electronics shop (not radio shack), should carry something that would work for your application.

Actually, radio shack does sell reed switches, saw 'em there last week.
I don't know how you would use on to indicate neutral. Easiest way would probably be to put it so that you close the reed swicth when it's in first, and have that reed switch ground the enable signal to the remote start gizmo. Or something. Of course that wouldn't help if you used another gear when you parked it. Unless you set it up so that it grounded anytime it wasn't centered (neutral), using one or a few on each side of teh gate.

You set it up in line with the automatic start circuit on the alarm. Mount the switch so that it is closed only when the shifter is in neutral position.
That way, the auto start circuit is energized only when the shifter is in the neutral position.
