Car starts goes 2 blocks, sputters and then dies ????

Hi Guys,

Long time no hear or see. This past Friday I was driving to supermarket and I noticed the service engine light came on and stayed on. Then the car started to sputter and then no matter how much gas I tried to give it it died. The car started back up right away, I would drive another few blocks and the same thing would happen. This happened a total of at least 15 times before I got to a safe place to shut down and take a look. I ended up having to tow the car back home. And at this point I'm so lost....confused to what might be the problem. Some other weirdness that was happening is the blower fan wasn not working either, for the heat....and then after I tried shutting the car down after re-starting it, I took out the key and the car remained on !!! and after it stalled itself off the lighs in the car remained on, ex. SERVICE ENGINE light and STEREO LIGHTS remained on. ??? Please help. Thanks guys, I appreciate all your answers.

John

I could take the key out of my ignition on my old car, I figured it was so you could open the trunk w/o shutting off the car, but i dont know, i didn't have a trunk release switch btw,
as for the other stuff...more info might help

John, Well you must have those little tiny gremlins running around in your car, either that or its possessed. But seriously you probally have more than one problem. I don't know too much about this but I think you may have computer problems. See it you can find what code your sevice engine soon light was giving out. If you have a repair manual it will tell you how to do it and what the codes mean. You just need to ground the bottom right 2 termanials to each other in the ADLS connecter and count the # of times your service light blinking (12 is once then small pause then twice) Wait and see if there is more than one code too. The people on here will be able to tell you what each number stands for. As long as you still have battery power to the car the codes will be stored. I hate computers so I went to carb. and ripped mine out. As for the heater Check your fuse. You could have had a power surge and blew it because of this. Good Luck!

Hey guys,

Sorry I haven't posted back to this topic. The problem with my car was the distributer. The chevy dealer took it and rebuilt the distributer from the top down. They also installed a new ignition module and VAT module. No more problems starting the car. Wahoooo...
Take care,

John
