Complete MSD ignition problem...

Hey guys my buddy and I went to start his 327 for the first time tonight and we got nothing. Theres no spark at all. Now he has an MSD 6AL box with a Blaster 2 coil and a MSD pro billit vacume advance dist. Now the box is hooked up rigth and getting power and all and the coil is sparking but its not comming out of the dist. terminals to go to the wires and plugs. We are thinkings the box or the Dist. is defective. Now there are two wires coming out of the box that plug into the dist. a purple and i forget the other. Should any of these have power or wut? also wut about the two coming out of the dist that they plug into?? Do they give off a signal i can find with a test light or something of the sort?? thanks guys

The 2 wires from is send the signal to the box for when to fire (like the old points system) but you said the coil was sparking, so I would check the wires to the distributor, to the plugs (at night...just try to start.) to make sure they are not arcing...then check (or change) your cap and rotor.

Just a starting point.

If the coil sparks then the box and coil are working. The offical way to test it is to take the white wire coming off the box. Unplug the coil plug wire from the top of the distributor and place it near something metal (a ground) Now turn turn the ignition into the ON position so the box gets power. Now take the white wire and ground it. Once you take the white wire away from the ground, the coil will spark and make a silly noise.

Ok we changed the cap and rotr and still nothing. The coild is definatly sparking and its going through the coil wire into the cap bot its not coming off the terminals on the cap to go to the wires and then to the plugs. We are thinking the dist. is bad but how do we tell??? The 2 wires coming off the dist. send a signal to the MSD box telling it when to fire correct?? Well it is fireing the coil cause we hooked up a spark plug rigth into the coil wire and its sparking so doesn;t that mean its giving the box a signal??
Ok my next question is if I stab either of the wires coming off the dist. while the car is cranking should i get any response out of the test light or no?? thanks guys..

Yes...it is giving the box a signal...

look inside the new cap (or the old one) and see if it looks like it is arcing to the bottom of the distributor...should look kinda like burnt plastic, or a trace of something (sorry...hard for me to explain ) Also look at the rotor as well.

Look to see if the coil wire (to the dist) is touching metal nearby...look at the wire to see if it is burnt (or change it completely) You siad that a spark plug would fire, but I assume that was holding it away from the firewall...

Solved.. Thanks for all the help guys. It ended up being a combination of 2 different things, The first think i did was bend up the rotor tab so it woudl touch the contact on the cap. Then my buddy had the positive wire going to the choke for the carb hooked up to the coil and when i unhooked that we got plenty of spark. So I guess it just wasn't getting enough power or somthing. Well on another note we got his 327 fired up and did the break in thing and it all went very smooth. The only think that we have a problem with is the smart guy put a balencer on that has the mark at the top when its at TDC and a mark for the ones on the side so we gotta figure somthing out.. But If your curious heres some specs on his motor: 327, .040 over, Dart Iron Eagle heads with 2.02-1.60 valves and 180cc runners. XE274 cam, Airgap intake, and on top for now is a 670 street avenger. oh yea its around 9.5:1... thanks again guys, I'll let you know how it runs when I get it all tuned for him and what not.

glad to hear you solved your problem.. there is nothing worse than not being able to fire up a new engine due to a stupid problem. Just curious how does that camshaft sound while idling kinda choppy or pretty smooth, i just bought the same cam for my 406.. just wondering about the idle quality.
