Removing Computer Control
I have a 1985 Z28 with the LG4 and 700R4 transmission. I just bought a Holley 600 cfm VS carb and was wondering what else needed to be done to remove all computer control from the engine. I know the distributor is computer controlled as well. Does anyone know if the engine will still run if I just replace the E4ME with the Holley, or do I need to do more? Is the transmission computer controlled? I would assume so, but I have been wrong before. Thanks.

It should be a straight forward swap. My buddy did the same thing. you will probably need a carb adapter for the intake, and you will have to fab up some linkage for the tranny kick down though. Good luck.

There has been a debate over on the carb forum about leaving the computer in place and "fooling" it into staying in open loop, which will allow the distributor to provide timing advance based on the vacuum and engine speed inputs. Typically, though, people just put in a non-computer controlled HEI.
The transmission isn't computer controlled, but the lock-up of the torque converter clutch is. So, you need to replace that function (the TCC doesn't lock in open loop).
Any particular reason you're going through this no power increase, no driveability improvement, mileage decreasing carb downgrade?

Maybe he's like me and his current carb is about ready for the trash.Do you have a link to that thread? I'm interested in going non-CC as well.

I just want to make the car easier to work on as this is a learning process for me, and I will probably be getting a 350 this summer so I figure I might as well get it out of the way.

i was pondering the same swap(85 lg4, 700r4).but got a reb. carb.$260(cheaper than a new holley or crapelbrock.)youre gonna have to figure out carb. linkage, new distributor, make you a lockup switch for your TC, or buy a kit(bout $70). goin with a holley youll prolly lose a little mileage.lot easier just keepin the quadrajet.im NOT a quadrajet fan when it come to makin power on a highly modded engine, but for mild to stock its the best out there.

Even works well on a 350 (Air Adam not withstanding...).

But you're not there yet...
Still need to get the distributor.
Is this carb for the same 305 you want to get into the 13's?

Yeah, and I ditched the 350 idea. I would like to get the 305 into the 13's N/A, but if I have to I will get a nitrous plate or a blower. I am planning on getting a distributor within the next week. Will the engine start without this? What all is involved in changing the distributor? Should I make the rest of the ignition aftermarket too? Will the torque converter work with a non-CC dist. and carb.? If not, where can I get the kit to make it work? Sorry about all the questions. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
